Charles Anthony Prabhakaran (1985-2009) was the son of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and a member of the Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers (officially known as the Tamil Tigers An important member of the Liberation Tigers of Mir Eelam (LTTE). He died on May 18, 2009.

Charles Anthony Prabhakarn was born in 1985 (died 24 years old), named after a close friend of Velupillai Prabhakarn who served with the Sri Lankan Army in the early 1980s Killed in battle. Charles Anthony was born in Sri Lanka to a Tamil Hindu family. His ancestors belonged to the Thirumeni Kudumbam (also known as the Thirumeni family) who built the Sivan temple at Valvettithurai.

Parents and siblings

Charles Antony’s father, Velupillai Prabhakaran, was a militant leader and founder of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). He was killed in a firefight with Sri Lankan troops in May 2009. Anthony’s mother, Mathivathani Erambu, was reportedly killed by the Sri Lankan army; however, the army later denied killing her and said they did not know her whereabouts. Anthony had a younger brother, Balachandran Prabhakaran, who was shot dead by the Sri Lankan army in May 2009; and a younger sister, Duvaraga, who was reportedly killed in May 2009. He was found dead together with his mother on March 20.

Charles was the head of the LTTE’s information and technology wing and led the LTTE’s air division, the Air Tigers.

In early 2006, Anthony was in charge of the Air Tigers, the air wing of the LTTE. He is best known for assembling Czech-made Zlin-143 aircraft, which were used by the LTTE to attack important military bases in Sri Lanka. In March 2007, he also flew one of the planes to bomb Katunayake Air Force Base.

According to some sources, Charles Antony Prabhakaran died on May 18, 2009, during the final stages of the battle with the Sri Lankan Army.

During the final days of the Sri Lanka Army’s Operation North in 2008-2009, Charles attempted to penetrate the Sri Lanka Army’s defenses, but was unsuccessful. He was killed along with about 100 other LTTE fighters during the battle at Vellamullivaikkal in Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka.

  • In August 2007, a Tamil doctor who specialized in treating sexually transmitted diseases and was a close friend of LTTE leader Prabhakaran in Colombo was secretly taken to Kilinochchi by three bodyguards of the LTTE leader. He was taken to treat Charles Anthony, who was reported to have syphilis.
  • In May 2009, Charles Anthony was killed in a firefight with the Sri Lankan army, who found $12 million in his possession.
  • During a post-war search operation, the Sri Lanka Army discovered the birth certificates, horoscopes and photo albums of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and his son Charles Anthony. The birth certificates of Prabhakaran and Antony were neatly laminated and kept for public viewing.
