In February 2020, a newspaper published an article stating that the original creator of the dance was “Jalaiah Harmon,” a 14-year-old black girl from Fayetteville, Georgia, who watched her dance go viral without receiving any credit. This led to Charli facing backlash online for not giving Harmon credit. To defuse the situation, Charli approached Harmon and the two made a video together. Since then, Charli has made sure to credit those who created the dances she performs.

To this, Charli replied that she was sorry and was just having fun. Later, many of Charli’s fans began to attack Perez on Twitter, and Perez made a YouTube video talking about Charli’s father’s DUI charge in January 2014 and Charli’s time with her father at the time. Later, Perez also talked about Charli’s relationship with Chase Hudson. This led her fans to create a petition on Change.org asking TikTok to ban him from their platform, which received over 188,000 signatures.
- In November 2020, her family posted a YouTube video of the family and James Charles, a YouTuber and beauty guru, enjoying a dinner prepared by private chef Aaron May. In the video, Charli and her sister acted rudely to the chef and made faces as he described the meal. She also stated that she wished she had 100 million followers. She has since received backlash for her actions and lost more than 1 million followers on TikTok in less than a day. She later addressed the issue in an Instagram Live video and said,
You can hate me for what I did, but the reality is, it all happened because of a misunderstanding… I just don’t think it’s right.”
