When Charlie Puth tied the knot with fiancee Brooke Sansone last month, he thought he was ready to say his vows.
The 32-year-old singer-songwriter tells PEOPLE that he would have passed them ahead of time and that they rhymed “in a very real way.” But when the time came, so did the tears.
“I had practiced it so many times and I read it with such confidence. I thought I sounded like Barack Obama reading a speech,” he jokes about the vows. “And I got up there, I was shaking and crying, but I was so happy. I think luck has overtaken me.”
Puth — whose new series The Charlie Puth Show now airing on Roku — and Sansone, a childhood friend, were married Sept. 7 at Puth’s family home in Montecito, Calif. Vogue reported that the couple said “I do” in the driveway, in front of the olive tree, and that the reception was held in a tent.

The “Attention” singer says he and Sansone, 25, had intended to host a welcome party the night before the wedding at a restaurant, but plans fell through and they ended up hosting the party at their home.
“It was infinitely more special,” Puth says of skipping the outdoor venue. “Everywhere I look, my parents’ house, our house, all over the city… The city has become much more special for me because of all the memories of the wedding. I looked at the beach and thought, ‘OK, that’s where we were all the next day reminiscing about last night’.”
Shortly after tying the knot, Puth shared snaps of their special day on Instagram, including a video of him reading his emotional vows to PR coordinator Sansone.
“Today I stand before you Brooke, and I can’t help but realize that today is truly the happiest day of my 32 years of life,” he captioned his post. “Some things I could not predict, but one thing was always clear. Yes, somehow, it seemed I always knew I’d be standing up here with you.”

In another post, he continued the caption, which appears to be his actual vow: “I love you Brooke…I always have, I’m the best with you. I promise to love you every day of this life, and even more as we move into the next. Brooke Ashley Sansone, now you will be Brooke Ashley Puth, thank you for making me the happiest man alive. It was always you.”
Luckily for Puth, he got the stamp of approval from his new in-laws; says Sansone’s family is “just dying laughing” while watching his new show.
“I like to entertain people and that’s the reason I did the show, because I like to entertain people. Musically, of course, but also in this new way,” he says. “I want everybody to order Chinese food, whatever, at 8:00, and just put it down and just laugh and just take your mind off all the seriousness of the world.”
