Charlotte Rose Benjamin and e.l.f. Cosmetics Release Music Video for First Get Ready with Music Single 'Hairpin' (Exclusive)

Charlotte Rose Benjamin and elf cosmetics are here to brighten up your grooming routine.

On October 15th, elf’s new media arm, elf made, will announce Get ready with music album, a collection of songs dedicated to “encouragement” and “empowerment,” according to the company. The album — designed with your glamor in mind — will feature music from artists including Betty Who and Meduulla. But first up is “Hairpin,” a single about embracing the fun that can come with making bad decisions, written by rising indie artist Charlotte Rose Benjamin.

The retro music video for “Hairpin” was partially filmed in a zero-gravity plane, leading to the singer floating around in “little Blumarine shorts, a Dolce & Gabbana tiger-print jacket and little Jeffery Campbell pants surrounded by strangers in astronaut suits.”

“It felt like a weird dream,” she tells PEOPLE — and a pretty spectacular dream at that.

Benjamin has long been a fan of elf cosmetics, so joining the company on a new project seemed like a perfect collaboration. The indie star revealed that her favorite product is the brand’s Clear Brow & Lash Mascara, which she regularly stocks up at CVS.

“I actually have 10 in my bag and I don’t organize it in a way that I finish one and then throw it away and then start the next one. They’re all kind of half empty, but I just have to make sure I have enough because I’m so dependent on that product now,” adds Benjamin. “I must always have him with me. I feel naked without him!”

When Benjamin first received the request from Elf for the project, the idea of writing a song about empowerment was “challenging.” The singer has stated that most of her music is autobiographical in nature, but after realizing the idea that mistakes can be empowering in their own way, she found her way into “Hairpin.”

“I didn’t know how to channel feelings of empowerment in an honest way,” she admits. “But then I thought about how empowerment can be in making mistakes, doing what you want, ‘flying across the country for a doomed romance’, etc. I think ‘Hairpin’ is about life for a story that can be empowering.”

In the “Hairpin” video, Benjamin embraces elevated ’60s style as she sits in front of a sink surrounded by elf products before jetting off on a private jet seemingly to meet someone special. Mid-flight, she ended up floating in the back of the plane along with items from Elf’s beauty line.

The unique recording process left the singer nauseous – but also elated.

“Most of the crew got sick. When you go into a ‘zero gravity’ plane, you do a series of what they call parabolas,” she explains. “The airplane essentially takes off at almost 90 degrees, goes straight for 20 seconds, and then the nose dives back. When you’re at the top of the parabola, you’re weightless.”

She continues, “We did it 30 times in a row. I felt so happy and smiling the first 10 or 15 times. I threw up when we still had seven parables left, but I kept going. I totally surprised myself!”

Ultimately, Benjamin hopes that “Hairpin” will make listeners “just want to dance and give people energy and confidence” as they get ready for their own night out.

As for the singer, music has long played a role in her getting ready routine, which she sees as an act of self-care.

“I love getting ready! I could spend hours getting ready,” she shares. “If there’s an event that I’m excited about, you know, at 8 p.m., I’ll start getting ready at 3 p.m., I’ll play music, I’ll play a movie, I’ll have some wine, I’ll take a long shower, I’ll do every little thing. It’s so good take care of yourself.”

Get ready with music will be released on October 15.
