Screen Rant: Cheech, what a movie, man. This movie is fun, inspiring and full of heart. Julio, can you tell me about your character?

Cheech Marin: Julio runs the gym, which is the community center where all the action takes place, where all the basketball games take place. The parts you don’t see in the movie, or aren’t explained in the movie, but the judge sentenced Woody at this gym to be my niece. So it’s all a family matter. It’s an old story. You don’t need to know this.

Now, I love your energy working with Woody. Can you talk to me about working with him and building chemistry with Woody? champion?

Cheech Marin: We’ve worked together before. We did a play together in San Francisco. A big play by Sam Shepherd called The Late Henry Moss. So we’re very, very nervous, so we know each other’s rhythm. So when we’re fighting for a title, we know which key to play.

marvelous. Now, what drew you to this project?

Cheech Marin: Well, who doesn’t want to go to Winnipeg in the winter? The script is great and I love it. I know Woody, so it will be fun. But the script is great. But it’s getting better every day as I realize what’s really going on and what people are capable of playing is really at its best.

Well, it’s definitely because I love telling such funny and hilarious stories through comedy. Can you talk to me about why comedy is so important and now more than ever to represent these stories?

Cheech Marin: Well, a sense of humor helps you in any situation, it’s a way to relieve stress or understand or make anyone feel comfortable. I think it’s my relationship with my children. They know me well and know that I am always in their best interests. So whatever I say is funny, they think it’s funny. They don’t take it seriously so it’s fun to work in that situation because so many children with disabilities want to be treated normally. So you try to make them feel normal.

I think Bobby did a great job directing this movie. Can you talk about working with Bobby and his directing style? champion?

Cheech Marin: Well, he’s a very personable director. You don’t know if he’s rude or funny. He likes when you stand your ground, he still tries and if he disagrees, he tries to influence you. But if you have an opinion, and you want to go on, “Okay, let’s go,” because he’s real. It’s been a real pleasure working with him and his path, especially with the basketball players. Great to see that.
