Cheri Oteri and Michael McKean Remember Martin Mull After His Death: ‘Always Brilliantly Funny’ (Exclusive)

Several stars pay tribute to Martin Mull following his death aged 80.

Saturday night live alum Cheri Oteri, who co-starred with Mulla in the 2011 film And they started, told PEOPLE she became a fan of the late star after seeing him appear on the 1970s sitcom.

“I remember watching as a child Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and he was very cool and interesting,” said Oteri, 61. “And I was like, ‘Wow.’ When you grow up and watch someone, and then you make a movie with them, you say, ‘I was on the floor watching you, and now I have to make a movie with you.’ And I was really thankful that I did.”

The actress added that Mull lived up to all her expectations and that the pair would talk “a lot about gardening”, which was the actor’s favorite pastime – and a favorite hobby of Otera herself.

Michael McKean, who starred alongside Mull in 1985 A cluealso shared a statement with PEOPLE, saying the actor’s “music, his artistry and his humor were matched by his immense intelligence.”

He added: “He could be stingy, but never without reason, and always brilliantly funny.”

Corey Feldman recalled Mull with whom he acted Fernwood 2 nightas someone who was “one of the people who helped launch my career” in a tribute to Xu (formerly known as Twitter).

He added: “My first sketch of any comedy was him and @FredWillard at #Fernwood [at 5 years old].”

The film’s director Paul Feig also said that Mull was “influential in his life” on X, noting that the actor “was the greatest.”

Tribute to celebrities who died in 2024

Mull’s daughter confirmed his death in an Instagram post on Friday, June 28, writing: “I am heartbroken to say that my father passed away at home on June 27, after a courageous battle with a long illness.”

“He was known for excelling in every creative discipline imaginable, and also for shooting commercials for Red Roof Inn,” she continued. “He would find that joke funny. He was never funny.”

She also wrote that her dad “will be greatly missed by his wife and daughter, his friends and colleagues, fellow artists, comedians and musicians, and—the mark of a truly exceptional person—many, many dogs. I loved him terribly.”
