News about Chet Holmgren

Chet Holmgren, the second overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, was expected to have a terrific rookie season in Oklahoma City. Holmgren would be a welcome addition to a team that has often played without a 7-footer on the floor given the offseason progress of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the rise of Josh Giddey and rookie Jalen Williams.

But Holmgren missed the 2022-2023 season. due to a foot injury he suffered during a Pro-Am match last summer. Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid and Blake Gryphon have all been forced to miss their first professional seasons due to injuries in the past 15 years, so the former Gonzaga isn’t the first player to miss his entire rookie year.

For the teams that drafted them, Simmons, Embiid and Gryphon all returned and had stellar seasons. Simmons received the 2017-18 Rookie of the Year award after missing his rookie season.

In the years since his injury, Simmons has continued his impressive play, being selected to three All-Star, All-NBA, and two All-Defensive teams. There’s no question that the former 76er was a highly productive player who put together several solid seasons, even though many people would downplay the value of his accomplishments as a result of how he ended his time in Philadelphia.

Joel Embiid, Simmons’ former teammate, missed his first two NBA seasons due to injuries, appearing in just 31 games in his third season. But after overcoming those setbacks, Embiid became an all-around big man who can shoot, dribble and play in the paint.

Embiid averaged 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.5 blocks per game in his first 31 NBA games. Since his rookie season, the former Kansas Jayhawk has averaged a double-double, and after an outstanding season, he was named NBA MVP for the 2022-23 season.

The Gryphon has recovered from an injury that prevented the dynamic striker from playing during what was supposed to be his debut season. The Gryphon won the 2010-11 Rookie of the Year award thanks to his incredible average of 22.5 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He is from Oklahoma.

In his post-injury years, the explosive big man also placed first in the Slam Dunk Contest and was selected to six All-Star and five All-NBA teams.
