On November 13, 2023, officials from China’s National Health Commission revealed an increase in the incidence of respiratory diseases in the country during a press conference. The UN health authority said in a statement published on X that there had been an “increase in flu-like illnesses since mid-October compared to the same period in the previous three years” in the country’s northern regions.

The public disease surveillance system ProMED and the media reported on groups of young people in northern China not diagnosed with pneumonia on November 21. The WHO said it was not known if they were linked to the overall rise in respiratory illnesses previously recorded by Chinese authorities or if they were unrelated incidents. The WHO continued: “WHO has formally requested detailed information from China regarding the increase in respiratory illnesses and reported pneumonia clusters in children.” On November 13, Chinese officials told reporters that the rise in respiratory illnesses was caused by the lifting of restrictions related to COVID-19 and the spread of known diseases, such as the flu and common pediatric bacterial infections.

The WHO said it was unsure whether ProMED’s report had anything to do with the press conference held by the authorities and was seeking clarification. Through our current technical cooperation and network in China, WHO maintains communication with doctors and scientists. The WHO stated: “We also requested additional information on the current burden on health care systems, as well as recent trends in the circulation of known pathogens including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, RSV and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.”
