Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the 1968 Dick Van Dyke Classic, Is Getting a Remake

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang gets the remake treatment.

A reimagining of the beloved 1968 musical fantasy is underway from Amazon MGM Studios and EON Productions, PEOPLE confirms. Development is still in the early stages, and the screenwriter, director and cast are yet to be determined.

Original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang saw Dick Van Dyke in the role of the eccentric widower inventor Caractacus Potts who takes care of his two children, Jeremy (Adrian Hall) and Jemima (Heather Ripley). Together with the heiress of the Scrumptious candy empire, Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), they repair an old race car that has magical abilities. The quartet use a magical car to embark on a harrowing adventure narrated by Caractacus.

The film is an adaptation of a children’s novel from 1964 Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magic Car, written by Ian Fleming. When the book was transformed into a film four years later, the screenplay was written by director Ken Hughes and children’s author Roald Dahl. The film was produced by Albert “Cubby” Broccoli.
