News about Chris Christie
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has hit back after months of constant booing and booing over a debate clash with former President Donald J. Trump.
Outside Miami’s renowned Cuban restaurant Versailles, Mr. Christie addressed the media on Friday. “If you qualify for the stage, which Trump has, not showing up is completely disrespectful to the Republican Party, which twice nominated you, and to the Republican voters, whose support you’re seeking again,” he said.
In an apparent attempt to convince the easily angered former president to attend Wednesday’s debate in Milwaukee, Mr. Christie has consistently attacked and criticized Mr. Trump as a coward throughout the presidential campaign.
Apart from Mr. Christie’s retweets on social media and in speeches, Mr. Trump does not appear to be falling for the trap. He indicated last week that he would drop out of the inaugural Republican debate in favor of participating in a simulcast interview with Tucker Carlson.
Mr. Trump’s absence from the debate could result in a vague exchange of sharp words between Mr. Christie and the other candidates without the pyrotechnics of a Trump retort.
Ryan Williams, a Republican strategist and veteran of two presidential campaigns, said: “They’ve been taunting each other back and forth on Twitter and in campaign halls, so they’re taking away Christie’s big moment if Trump doesn’t show up on stage.” “You can use the debate to spread the anti-Trump message that he’s pushing, but if the two don’t see each other face to face, you’re going to miss that viral moment.”
But Mr. Christie and his group also see a chance if the abrasive and volatile former president is not around. Mr. Christie, a skilled debater and the lone Trump skeptic with any support in the Republican field, could fill the void by replacing Mr. Trump with candidates who have shown Mr. Trump significantly more respect.
At a town hall meeting in Miami on Friday, Mr. Christie tried that method, criticizing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for leaking debate strategy notes from his super PAC that instructed him to defend Mr. Trump against Mr. Christie’s attacks on the stage.
If Mr. DeSantis decides to do that, Mr. Christie advised him to “get the hell out of the race.” The prospect of talks without Mr. Trump did not particularly upset Mr. Christie, according to an interview he gave this month while on a surprise visit to Ukraine.
It doesn’t change my point of view or my strategic direction, he noted. “Because it only means two things if he’s not there. One is that he hesitates to defend his record on the same debate stage. And secondly, this is a guy who just buys me time by not showing up. So everything is fine. I succeed in both cases.
The debate, according to Mr. Christie and his advisers, is an environment that favors the former governor. Mr. Christie, who is at ease in spontaneous moments in front of the cameras, has a confrontational style that has served him well in previous debates. He has more than a decade of experience participating in them through two gubernatorial campaigns and his 2016 presidential bid.
He discussed campaign topics with trusted advisers to prepare for Wednesday and envision potential outcomes as he maneuvers through the chaos of the eight-lecture stage. As he assesses the state of the race, he has pursued the argument intensively, bringing it up in informal conversations with advisers and political friends.
