Chris Martin Falls in Stage Trap Door While Performing with Coldplay in Australia

Coldplay’s Chris Martin had a near miss while performing on stage in Australia.

On Sunday, November 3, as the British rock band were wrapping up their last of four shows at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium, Martin, 47, regaled the crowd with some anecdotes about their Music of the Spheres international world tour when he fell into an open trap.

In videos of the incident shared on social media, the frontman can be seen walking backwards down an elevated catwalk, addressing the crowd, when he toppled backwards through an open door. The audience can be heard gasping as some crew members nearby tried to help Martin back.

One fan who filmed the incident captioned his video on X (formerly Twitter): “The moment Chris Martin fell through the door right in front of me at the #Coldplay concert tonight.”

After getting back to his feet, Martin told the crowd, “That wasn’t planned!”

He also joked: “Shit, that was almost a YouTube moment!” before thanking one of the crew for catching him.

Coldplay’s massive international tour runs from March 2022 and is currently scheduled to end in September 2025 with a 10-date tour at London’s Wembley Stadium. After their last show in Melbourne, Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion will head to Sydney to complete their Australian leg before heading to New Zealand.

The record-breaking tour has been the source of many viral moments since its inception. A number of special guests joined Coldplay on stage for surprise performances — including Maggie Rogers, Shawn Mendes, Michael J. Fox and more.

Last summer, as the group prepared to play their first of four dates in Dublin in August, Martin even brought Coldplay’s music out of the stadium for an impromptu performance outside, with several of his PRAYING collaborators.

Appearing on Dublin’s Grafton High Street, Martin was joined for a pop-up performance by Nigerian singer Burna Boy, English rapper Little Simz, Palestinian-Chilean singer Elyanna and Argentinian singer Tini.

In an Instagram video shared at the time, Coldplay called the night a “magical moment.”

“WE ARE BEGGING. Grafton Street, Dublin,” reads the band’s announcement. “Magical moment with @burnaboygram, @littlesimz, @elyanna, @tinistoessel. Thanks to everyone who showed up and to TikTok for helping make it happen.”

Coldplay is also preparing to release more new music. In June, the group released their tenth studio album, Music of the moon, along with the follow-up single “feelslikeimfallinginlove”. Despite the new release and global tour, Martin revealed that Coldplay only plan to release 12 “proper albums” as a band before they stop making fresh material.

“We’re only going to make 12 real albums, and that’s for real,” he said in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, which debuted exclusively on PEOPLE in September.

“So if we do something together creatively after that besides the tour, then it’s going to be something different, or it’s going to be a side thing, or it’s going to be a compilation of stuff that we haven’t finished,” Martin explained.
