Chris Pine Reveals True Story Behind His Harry Styles Spitgate Reaction

Chris Pine finally addresses the Harry Styles Spitgate drama from the Don’t Worry Darling premiere. The viral moment caught on video which was dubbed Spitgate online was just one of many controversies that plagued Don’t Worry Darling during its press tour last fall, including public debate over Shia LaBeouf’s departure, rumors of an on-set romance between Styles and Olivia Wilde, and a falling out between Florence Pugh and the director. During the Don’t Worry Darling premiere, it appeared as if Styles spit on Pine, which the latter’s representative quickly denied in a statement.

Now, nearly six months later, Pine is finally addressing the Styles Spitgate controversy himself. In a new video interview with Esquire, Pine reiterated that Styles did not spit on him, though based on the video, he admits that it looks like he did. Pine also revealed what actually happened between the two during the moment in question, as Styles leaned down and said, “It’s just words isn’t it?” which was an inside joke between the two.

Watch the relevant portion in the video above (starting at 1:32) or read Pine’s full explanation below:

Harry did not spit on me. Harry is a very kind guy. I was on the plane and we’re flying back from Venice having a great time on the plane and my publicist wakes me up and says, “We have to craft a statement on what happened in Venice.” She showed me the thing and it did look, indeed, like Harry spit on me. He didn’t spit on me. I think Harry leaned down and said, “It’s just words isn’t it?” We had this little joke. We were all jet lagged and trying to answer questions and sometimes when you’re doing these press things your brain goes befuddled and you start speaking gibberish, so we had a joke: “It’s just words.”

The Chris Pine-Harry Styles Spitgate Controversy Explained

During Don’t Worry Darling‘s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, a questionable moment was caught on video from multiple angles that appeared to show Styles subtly spitting on Pine as he took a seat next to his Don’t Worry Darling co-star. The moment went insatiably viral online as the video was rewatched and examined like the Zapruder film. Pine’s publicist quickly quelled speculation in a statement calling the notion of Styles spitting on him “a ridiculous story” and “a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation.”

However, Styles didn’t exactly do his part to put the controversy to rest as, a few days later, he joked during a concert, “I just popped very quickly to Venice to spit on Chris Pine.” Now, Pine has finally addressed the controversy himself and revealed exactly what was said between the two during the furiously debated moment, during which no spit was involved. Albeit months after the alleged incident and Don’t Worry Darling‘s theatrical release, Pine’s comments should finally close the book on one of the more bizarre Hollywood controversies in recent memory.
