Christian Atsu (Christian Atsu, 1992-2023) is a Ghanaian football player who has played for the Ghanaian national football team and many clubs such as Everton, Newcastle United and Hatay Sports. He was found dead after the 2023 Türkiye earthquake.

Christian Atsu Twasam, also known as Christian Atsu, was born on Friday, January 10, 1992 in Ada Foah, Greater Accra, Ghana (age 31 at time of death). His zodiac sign is Capricornus. He has been interested in playing football since childhood and participated in many regional competitions for Madina Nakwantang BA 2 Primary School. He played for the Peace Boys Football Club, then transferred to the Feyenoord Football Academy in Gomoafet, Central Ghana, and later trained at the West African Football Academy in Sogakope, Volta Region, Ghana. Subsequently, he joined Cheetah FC in Kasoa at the end of 2009.

He played in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, where Ghana lost on penalties to Ivory Coast in the final. In January 2010, he impressed the Portuguese club Porto team with his skills in a 3-day trial training, and was acquired by the Portuguese club Porto team in January 2010. In 2011, he helped Porto’s youth team win the FIFA Youth Championship in Zurich, Switzerland. In the 2012-13 season, he returned to Porto and played 9 games for the team that season.

He has suffered multiple injuries during his career. In December 2014, he missed six games with a hamstring injury and spent 21 days recovering. In September 2015, he missed nine games with a bone stress injury and took 69 days to recover. In February 2016, he suffered a muscle fiber tear and missed two games and took 16 days to recover. In November 2017, he strained his thigh muscle, missed four games and spent 24 days recovering. In April 2018, he missed 6 games due to a knee injury and took 79 days to recover. Throughout his career, he actively supported various charities in Ghana and other countries where he lived. In 2017, he began working with the charity organization Arms around The Child as an ambassador to raise funds for orphans and underprivileged children. He helped raise funds to build a school in Ghana and succeeded in acquiring land and partially funding the school’s construction. He also works with the Crime Check Foundation to help secure the release of people jailed for minor crimes. He helped free a 62-year-old woman, affectionately known as Mama Teresa, who was facing 10 years in prison for marijuana possession, and funded her surgery. He paid the fine for a blind man named Peter Ennin, who was sentenced to prison. In 2018, he paid fines for 10 prisoners convicted of stealing food, who faced the threat of jail time if they did not pay. In 2021, he donated 80 pairs of football boots to young players of his former club Cheetah FC. He donated many items to the Becky Foundation, an orphanage in Senya Berekum, Ghana.

He disappeared during a series of earthquakes in Turkey on February 6, 2023. His apartment in the Ronesans Rezidans building in Hatay province collapsed in the earthquake. He was scheduled to leave Turkey on a flight hours before the earthquake; however, after scoring the winning goal in the match on 5 February 2023, he decided to stay. On February 7, 2023, Hataspil’s vice-president Mustafa Ozart said he was rescued and taken to hospital. On February 8, 2023, Hattaspear’s agent, Volkan Demirel, stated that he was still missing. On February 14, 2023, his Turkish agent, Nana Sechere, stated that he had not been found, only two pairs of shoes. On February 18, 2023, his agent confirmed his death at the age of 31 and his body was recovered from the rubble of the building. On February 19, 2023, his body was airlifted from Istanbul, Turkey to Accra, Ghana, where he was buried in his hometown.

Several footballers and teams around the world have paid tribute to him and mourned his passing. Former Ghana captain Mohammad Qudus scored a goal for the club in a game and showed off a T-shirt he was wearing underneath with a message in his tribute.
