Anna Merlan Wikipedia, Wiki, Vice, Twitter, UVA, Bio: The May Sidney Award goes to Anna Merlan of Vice News for her coverage of the growing influence of vaccine advocates in state legislatures across the country. Nearly identical anti-vaccine laws and rulings have been proposed in Wyoming, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, and South Carolina. Merlan’s article explains this trend.

These proposals were made by a fringe lobbying group called America’s Frontline Doctors (AFLD), which is known for spreading false information and conspiracy theories. The group is closely related to the Tea Party Patriots, a group that supports Donald Trump and whose SuperPAC has generated millions of dollars for Republicans. In July, Trump posted video of an AFLD press conference that was removed from most social media sites for spreading dangerous rumors.

dr. Simone Gold, president of the AFLD, was arrested for her role in the January 6 Capitol riot.

Republican politicians and fringe doctors have spoken out during the pandemic, as the medical community serves as justification for the Republicans’ laissez-faire stance on the virus.

The closures and masks were never necessary, according to the doctors, who assure that the disease does not pose a threat. Although vaccination against COVID is optional, the conservative doctrine that presents vaccination as a threat to personal freedom also fits well with anti-vaxxism.

According to Merlan, anti-vaxxers at the state level are trying to ban fictitious “vaccine passports.” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene compared vaccination passports to the “mark of the beast” in the Bible at the government level.

While none of the AFLD bills have passed yet, the abundance of bills provides an insight into the rhetoric the anti-vaccination movement has used to attack the COVID vaccine.

According to Sydney judge Lindsay Beyerstein, “this month’s winner shines a light on the troubling alliance between fringe politics and medicine.” “Anti-vaxxers are gaining influence at the state level, and their influence may last beyond the pandemic.”

Anna Merlan, Vice’s senior reporter, writes mostly stories about conspiracy theories, the communities that develop around them, and their consequences for society.

In 2019, he published The Republic of Lies: America’s Conspiracy Theorists and Their Surprising Rise to Power. In the past, she has worked as a writer for Jezebel, the Village Voice, and the Dallas Observer.
