Christie Blatchford was born on May 20, 1951 in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, Canada. Blatchford was of Canadian descent and practiced Christianity. In terms of family history, she was the daughter of Ross Blatchford (father) and Kathleen Blatchford. (Mother). During World War II, her father ran a hockey rink in Noranda while he was fighting in the Royal Canadian Air Force. When Blatchford was in grade 11, his father was named superintendent of the North Toronto Memorial Arena and the family moved to Toronto. As for her education, she graduated from North Toronto Collegiate Institute in 1970. She then enrolled at Ryerson University to study writing and began working for The Ryersonian, the campus publication.

Career

As for her employment, Blatchford began working part-time for The Globe and Mail in 1972 while still enrolled at Ryerson’s School of Writing, where she graduated first in her class. Furthermore, when the Globe hired her full-time in 1973, she was hailed as Canada’s first female sportswriter and one of only six female sportswriters in North America. From 1975 to 1977, she worked as the chief correspondent of the publication.

She then suddenly moved to the rival Toronto Star, where she covered crime cases from 1978 as a reporter from 1977 to 1982. In an attempt to transition from news writer to editor, she proposed a light article for the Toronto Sun in 1982. Despite being paid less money than in Star, Sun accepted the job. After Paul Rimstead died in 1987, her article was moved from the recreation section to prominent column space on Page 5. After 16 years at the Sun, where she covered high-profile cases like those of Paul Bernard and Karla Homolka, Blatchford returned to reporting and harder news in the late 1990s.

Career

Blatchford was diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2019 after her work documenting the 2019 federal election campaign was interrupted due to chronic muscle discomfort. By the time the disease was discovered, it had spread to the hips and spine. Blatchford was inducted into the Canadian News Hall of Fame the following month, but was unable to attend the event.

She took a leave of absence from her blog to attend treatment at the Princess Margaret Cancer Institute, where she underwent several months of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy. She died in Toronto on February 12, 2020.
