Christina Aguilera and Sabrina Carpenter know what girls want and girls want a duet!
In collaboration with Spotify, Aguilera looked back on the 25th anniversary of her self-titled debut with a live performance of some of her most famous songs, with a live band and backing singers. The singer also reunited with Ron Fair, the senior vice president of A&R at RCA Records who is credited with discovering Aguilera, to reflect on the early years of her career.
Aguilera also brought out “Espressa” singer Carpenter to sing a cover of her second single, “What a Girl Wants.” A proud Aguilera looks on as Carpenter begins the song before taking on the second verse. The two exchange voice duties effortlessly – all while sitting on the couch.

Carpenter also took time to discuss the influence Aguilera had on her as a child.
“I think I heard your voice for the first time [when] my mom played me a video of you singing ‘A Sunday Kind of Love’ when you were eight,” Carpenter told Aguilera. She was referring to Aguilera’s appearance in 1990 at Search with an asterisk when she was around 10 years old, where she stunned the crowd with a passionate rendition of one of Etta James’ fan favorites.
“It was the most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen as a young girl who wanted to sing but just didn’t think she could at that age.”
If the performance is any indication, their mics are on. The only thing you can catch them doing is on social media, where the pair teased their much-hyped collaboration in an adorable social media post. Carpenter followed the audio of Kylie Jenner saying, “I’m obsessed with my mom,” referring to Aguilera.
The 25-year-old entry for Aguilera’s landmark debut serves as a way to bring together “the past and the present,” according to the singer in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. In addition to tapping Carpenter for her big hit, she also gave “Genie in a Bottle” the mgk treatment, where the multi-hyphenate added soulful guitar to the live band.

Aguilera closed the emotional session with the song “Reflection”, the Mulan the soundtrack to the song that started it all. Due to the reception the song received, it was eventually accepted as the track on her debut.
