Christina Ricci urges her fans to “believe in the victims”.
The Yellow vests star, 43, shared a candid statement to her Instagram Story on Saturday about her experience with men who were “privately abusive.”
The post – which comes shortly after actors Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis apologized for writing controversial letters of support to their That 70s show costar and convicted rapist Danny Masterson — opened with Ricci saying that “sometimes people we’ve loved and admired do terrible things.”
“Maybe they wouldn’t do those things to us and we only know who they were to us, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t do horrible things and to discredit the abused is a crime,” Ricci wrote.
“The people we know as ‘scary guys’ can be predators and abusers. It’s hard to accept that, but we have to. If we say we support victims — women, children, men, boys — then we have to be able to take this stance.”

Ricci continued her message in an accompanying Instagram story, where she described knowing “a lot of ‘horrible guys’ that I loved who were proven to be privately abusive.”
“I too had personal experience with this,” she wrote. “Trust the victims. It’s not easy to come forward. It’s not easy to get a conviction.”

Ricci’s posts came on the same day Kutcher, 45, and Kunis, 40, shared a video message on social media explaining why they wrote letters of support for Masterson – who was sentenced this week to 30 years in prison for two rapes that took place during his age That 70s show.
In the letters, obtained by PEOPLE this week, Kutcher called his former co-star “a role model” and “a remarkably honest and purposeful human being.” In her letter, Kunis described Masterson as someone of “exceptional character” and an “extraordinary role model and friend.”
“We are aware of the pain caused by the letters we wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson,” Kutcher began in a video shared on Instagram, where Kunis said she and her husband “support the victims and will continue to do so.” in the future.”
Kunis explained that the letters “were not written to question the legitimacy of the justice system or the validity of the jury’s decision. Kutcher added, “A few months ago, Danny’s family reached out to us and asked us to write sign letters that represent a person we’ve known for 25 years, how the judge could fully take this into account when sentencing.”
Kutcher went on to say that the letters were “intended for the judge to read, not to undermine the victims’ testimony or retraumatize them in any way,” and added that they were “sorry if that happened.”
“Our hearts go out to every person who has ever been a victim of sexual assault, sexual assault or rape,” Kunis concluded the video.

On Thursday, Masterson — who was convicted of raping two women in May — was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison after both victims gave victim impact statements. One woman called Masterson “pathetic, deranged and completely violent,” while another said she “knew he belonged behind bars for the safety of all the women he came in contact with,” the Associated Press reported.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón told PEOPLE in a statement that it has been “a long and difficult road for Mr. Masterson’s victims,” while the actor’s legal team insisted that he is not guilty and will seek to overturn the convictions.
