Christmas Number One 2023 — Wham! beat Sam Ryder in chart battle as Last Christmas finally hits the top spot

Take the Wham! did you ever get a christmas number one before 2023?

Last Christmas by Wham! is without a doubt one of the most legendary festive jingles of all time.

So you’ll be surprised to hear that he’s never been crowned Christmas number one until this year.

He came close several times, but never secured the much-coveted crown until now.

How do you make a Christmas list?

The chart is compiled from streams and sales for the week up to midnight on Thursday night.

The Wham! and Pogues songs have been reissued on vinyl, while Ryder’s single is available on CD – with physical sales counting more than streams in the chart formula.

Streams of newer songs are also weighted more – meaning Ryder and Sheeran/Sir Elton have a better chance of competing with classic holiday tunes.

Famous Christmas battles number one

In 2016, a feud developed between Little Mix fans and Rangers FC supporters over their Christmas #1 fights.

This was followed by a social media campaign by football fans to bring the 1960s hit Glad All Over to the top of the charts in honor of their player Joe Garner.

Little Mix fans were left unimpressed as it “threatened” to scupper the girl band’s chance of taking the festive top spot.

On Xu, ex-Twitter, Rangers fans joked: “Is there any truth to the rumors that Rangers casuals and Little Mix casuals are organizing a rumble??”

Another shared a photo of football fans clashing with police and wrote: “Rangers in Little Mix away.”

One furious Little Mix fan tweeted: “I’m sorry but if that cheesy football song ruins Touch’s chance of being #1 I’m deleting my account.”

No song won – instead the bookies’ favorite Clean Bandit with Rockabye was the winner.

Rage Against the Machine ended the X Factor’s dominance

Rebel rockers Rage Against the Machine scored the 2009 Christmas number one in the UK.

Fans launched 1992’s Killing In The Name into the charts in a bid to end the X Factor’s dominance.

Simon Cowell branded the campaign “stupid” and “cynical”, but it only seemed to fuel fans.

Rage Against The Machine band member Tom Morello said winning the ceremonial race would be “a wonderful dose of anarchy”.
