Christopher Bhatti (1978-2001) was the forger and associate and driver of the main criminal in the 2003 Abdul Karim Telgi scam. In 2001, Bhatti was murdered by Tergi’s associates for robbing him of his money.

Telgi Profile and Alleged Theft
In 2000, Christopher met Abdul Karim Telgi through his brother-in-law Arun Hurli, who happened to be Telgi’s neighbor. Telgi later offered him a job in a counterfeit stamp paper manufacturing company in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, which he accepted. According to sources, Christopher also served as Telji’s driver. Christopher and Suraj Buki later reportedly misappropriated around Rs. Three employees of the Telji company are missing; some sources even claim that Bhatti stole around Rs. $180,000 was taken from Telgi’s company and made to look like a robbery before leaving the company. When Telji learned that Christopher had taken his money, he asked his associates to convince Christopher to come to Mumbai to resolve the matter.
Murder and Investigation
On August 27, 2001, Christopher along with Arun Hurli visited Telgi near Minoo Manor building in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai ). Instead of solving the problem, Tergi’s associates brutally tortured and killed Christopher, and Tergi then allegedly placed Christopher’s body in the trunk of his car and dumped it into Mahim Creek. The next day, police found Christopher’s body in the creek but could not identify it. A case was subsequently registered at the Shahu Nagar police station and Christopher’s clothes and photograph were retained for identification before the body was disposed of. Nine months later, during the 2003 stamp paper scam investigation, Telji’s colleague Sajid revealed details of Christopher’s murder. Christopher’s murder was subsequently reopened and was first investigated by Kraft Parade police. The case was later handed over to the Mumbai Crime Branch. API Dilip Kamat was later arrested for assisting Telji in committing the fraud and was later responsible for Christopher’s murder. On October 27, 2002, Telgi was arrested in connection with the case and charges were filed against him. Further investigation revealed that Christopher had been severely tortured, resulting in a broken leg and numerous cigarette burn marks. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) subsequently re-examined Christopher’s murder and stamp paper fraud cases and found that the initial investigation into Christopher’s case was inadequate. Police Inspector Mahabole explained in an interview that when there was no evidence that the body found in the creek was that of Christopher, they sought help from forensic experts at the Forensic Science Laboratory in Kolkata. Eventually, DNA from blood found on bandages found on the body was matched to blood found in Tergi’s house and car. The same bandage used to bind Christopher’s leg is also associated with Telgi’s work. This evidence confirmed that the body was indeed that of Christopher, who had been killed by Tergi and his associates. On November 29, 2007, a CBI special court convicted Telgi and his four associates Sajid Khan, Mohammed Ghaus Shigwe, Maqdum Hussain and Kalim Bandenawaz under Section 304 Part 2 of the IPC.
