During his acceptance speech earlier that evening, Murphy expressed his gratitude to Nolan, 53, saying: “I owe you more than I can say.”

He then thanked “every single member of the crew”, “every single member of the cast”, his “amazing team”, his family, including his wife of almost 20 years, Yvonne McGuinness, and their sons Malachy, 18, and Arana, 16.

“I love you so much and I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight,” he said. “It’s really, really important to me and – I don’t know if I said this in my speech because I can’t remember what I said – but I think in Ireland we’re really great at supporting artists and I think we need to continue to support artists and the next generation of actors and directors, I think that’s vitally important.”
