Cinema-goers have just a few hours left before the Surrey Quays venue closes for good
Odeon’s Surrey Quays cinema will close its doors for good today, leaving film fans scrambling for one last chance to catch a film at this historic venue.
The closure comes shortly after the popular cinema chain axed its Coven Garden earlier this month.
The decision to close these popular spots comes as both locations are set to be redeveloped by their respective owners.
In a statement, an Odeon spokesperson said: “ODEON confirms that it will be closing its Covent Garden and Surrey Quays cinemas.
“This is due to the reconstruction plans at both locations by the owner.
“Supporting our local cinema teams is our number one priority and we will aim to secure work for as many of them as possible in one of our other local cinema locations.
“We would like to apologize to our guests for any inconvenience this may cause.”
The Covent Garden site is slated for transformation into a “luxury” hotel and theater complex.
There is even speculation that Cirque du Soleil may be interested in the space as a potential 400-seat venue.
Cineworld confirms plans to temporarily close all 127 of its UK cinemas with 5,500 jobs at risk
One disappointed fan of the film took to social media to share his disappointment at Covent Garden’s closure: “Just popped into @ODEONCinemas and yes it’s closing this Thursday.
“The place is being turned into a luxury hotel and theater. Very sad.”
Odeon has already faced significant cuts recently.
Several cinemas closed last year, including those on Magdalen Street in Oxfordshire and Rigby Road in Blackpool.
The company promised to relocate staff and support affected employees.
As Odeon prepares to close these two key locations, Cineworld is also in the spotlight with reports of the potential closure of up to 25 of its UK cinemas as part of a major restructuring plan.
The chain is seeking to renegotiate leases for around 50 of its locations, but if landlords and Cineworld cannot reach an agreement, even more cinemas could face the axe.
The Sun has learned that Cineworld’s restructuring plans will soon be officially communicated to creditors and landlords.
The process would involve the company working with advisers to explore options that could include a sale or further closures.
As the final show times approach, the atmosphere at Covent Garden and Surrey Quays is bittersweet.
Movie buffs and locals alike will no doubt mourn the loss of these darling spots in the city’s vibrant cultural landscape.
