Coco Gauff says she called her boyfriend to ease her nerves the night before she won the 2023 US Open.
Tennis Channel celebrated Gauff’s birthday with her during a sweet on-air segment. The US Open winner was surprised by a pink cake with 20 candles, which Gauff immediately bit into without the help of any utensils.
“Let’s go! Well done,” the channel host said with a laugh as Gauff took a bite of her cake. “It’s good,” Gauff said after tasting her birthday cake.
The US Open champion is on a winning streak in Indian Wells this week, winning her last three singles matches. She easily defeated Elise Mertens 6-0, 6-2 on her birthday and will face China’s Yuan Yue on Thursday.
Coco Gauff believes she put ‘too much pressure’ on herself by winning: ‘I realized that defeat isn’t so bad’
Just before her birthday, Gauff spoke with PEOPLE on the red carpet at the TIME 2024 Women of the Year Gala on March 5, explaining her stance on not sharing everything in her life with the public, calling it a “one day at a time” decision.
“Honestly, it wasn’t something I had to set in stone. I think I felt like there were just parts of me that I like to share, and then there were parts that I kept to myself,” Gauff said.
She added: “And I think that’s just the beauty of it all, that people still know me and know parts of me, but not all of it. So I feel that my life is also somewhat in my hands.”

Gauff became a Grand Slam champion in September, securing her first major women’s singles title at the 2023 U.S. Open. She staged a major comeback in a three-set match against Belarus’s Aryna Sablenka — and the victory made her the youngest American to win the tournament since Serena Williams in 1999.
After the win, Gauff said she felt “a little bit in shock” and was “just grateful for this moment” during the postgame ceremony.
