  • Coco ended up defeating Karolína Plíškova and will advance to the quarterfinals in Dubai

Coco Gauff’s dad is proud of how his daughter handled herself on the court.

Gauff, 19, clashed with the umpire during the Dubai Tennis Championships on Wednesday over a disputed point.

In the end, Gauff defeated Karolína Plíškova in the match, after about a five-minute stoppage in the game in which the referee refused to award Gauff a point, instead saying that the point should be replayed. The American tennis star asked to speak with the match supervisor, but the referee refused.

The argument went viral on social media, with most fans and analysts agreeing with Coco.

Tennis great Andy Roddick wrote, “This is an absurd exchange for this umpire,” on X, formerly Twitter, and explained“1. She’s completely wrong 2. She’s lying about being wrong. 3. She must have just said more than 10 times, I want a supervisor.”

Roddick added, “That’s not a judgment call. He simply should have honored that common request and called the supervisor.”

Corey began, “I’m so proud of my daughter. Standing up for yourself and fighting for honesty. You have the strength of your grandmothers, who are two of the strongest women we know.”

“Although you were passionate, you remained respectful while articulating your argument. The scene is so familiar to women and women of color who are begging and fighting to be treated fairly and respectfully by their male counterparts,” he continued.
