CoD: Modern Warfare 2 Reveals In-Depth Gunsmith Progression

A brand-new look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 reveals the upcoming shooter’s new and improved Gunsmith weapon modification system. Set to release on October 28, the next installment in the FPS series will be a direct follow-up to the 2019 reboot of Modern Warfare. A Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta will begin on September 16, and developer infinity Ward has given fans an early look at how they will improve their favorite firearms.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 promises to push the FPS series forward with gameplay innovations and impressive engine improvements. Set after the events of 2019’s Modern Warfare, the game’s single-player campaign will see players reunite with iconic Task Force 141 members like John “Soap” MacTavish and Simon “Ghost” Riley. The franchise’s signature shooter gameplay will be significantly improved through features like realistic gun handling, advanced artificial intelligence and a robust Gunsmith system. Infinity Ward recently showed off Farm 18, a new Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer map, and now the developer is pulling the curtain back on the title’s Gunsmith mechanic.

A recent Call of Duty blog post and an accompanying Call of Duty YouTube video shed light on Modern Warfare 2’s improved Gunsmith system. Originally introduced in 2019’s Modern Warfare, the Gunsmith system lets players customize their weapons with cosmetic decals and functional attachments. Modern Warfare 2’s Gunsmith 2.0 will introduce Weapons Platforms, which can be changed dramatically by swapping out a Receiver attachment. Different Receivers turn a weapon into an entirely different class of firearm, ranging from assault rifles to machine guns. Gunsmith 2.0 will also improve progression by letting players use an attachment on any weapon once it’s unlocked, rather than making them unlock an attachment multiple times.

Modern Warfare 2 Makes Weapon Customization Even More In-Depth

As the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta draws near, the PlayStation CEO has criticized a multi-platform Call of Duty deal offered by Xbox. Earlier this year Microsoft moved to purchase Activision Blizzard, which would give Xbox ownership off all Activision properties including Call of Duty. This purchase would make future CoD installments exclusive to Xbox consoles, but a recent proposal from Xbox would let the series stay on PlayStation for several years. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan is not satisfied with this proposal, however, due to concerns that Call of Duty will be left off of PlayStation consoles in the near future.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 promises to expand on its predecessors by delivering an intense story and overhauled first-person shooter gameplay. Gunsmith 2.0 will be a large part of the series’ evolution, letting players progress much faster to obtain the weapon attachments they desire. Weapons Platforms will change the way players build their loadout, giving Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 players a much greater variety of options and strategies.
