Cole Sprouse on The Suite Life’s Enduring Impact: ‘Those Parts of Our Childhoods Are Special’ (Exclusive)

Cole Sprouse Doesn’t Take How “Special” He Is For Granted Zack and Cody’s apartment life is for many fans.

“Kudos to the people who write, act and direct and are creative in children’s programming,” he tells PEOPLE. The cast and crew of the hit Disney Channel series, with whom Sprouse remains close, “never expected it to be such an important part of so many people’s childhoods.”

As Riverdale star, 31, points out: “That’s what programming for kids really does. And in many ways it is responsible for shaping entire generations.”

Sprouse and his twin brother, Dylan, played hotel residents Cody and Zack Martin, respectively, on Zack and Cody’s apartment life from 2005 to 2008 alongside Ashley Tisdale, Brenda Song, Phil Lewis and Kim Rhodes. The leading duo then reprized their roles from 2008 to 2011 in the spinoff Apartment Life on deck and Movie The Suite Life.

“It’s really nice to see that people still have such a wonderful and nostalgic space still carved out for children’s programming and our show,” says Sprouse, who adds that viewers of all ages continue to show their love on social media and live.

Nowhere was this more evident than in November, when the Sprouse twins were bombarded with texts about their Italian dinner reservation date. Suite Life characters were given in the episode titled “When In Rome…” The popular Italian restaurant indicated that the next available seat was on November 16, 2023, to which Zack exclaimed, “What if I don’t feel [having] Italian that day?”

Sprouse told PEOPLE that he and his brother thought about doing something celebratory for the special date, but were prevented by the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike a few months before — and, more importantly, their father Matthew’s birthday.

“We had that moment where Dylan and I said, ‘We’re not really going to miss our dad’s 60th birthday to enjoy an Internet meme, are we?'” he says. “It seemed like one of those forks in the road.”

However, what it takes away from that fan response is that programming mode Apartment life “It’s arguably more important than most entertainment in shaping young people’s sense of comedy… Youth culture is a huge byproduct of the shows we all watch and discuss. I can still quote 90 percent sponge Bob episodes!”

He adds: “Those parts of our childhood are really special and golden. And it’s nice to see that we still have that space with people.”
