In 2023, Farrell won a Golden Globe for his role in Banshee of Inisherin. “My kids are watching this at home. James and Henry, the loves of my life, I love you so much,” the father-of-two said in his acceptance speech.

“He is nothing but a gift. He is, as far as I’m concerned, exactly the way he should be,” Banshee of Inisherin star said of James in 2008. “James is just perfect, to be honest. He’s a happy boy and if you can honestly say your child is happy, then you’re a very, very lucky man.”

Speaking about James in 2013, Farrell said his older son was a constant inspiration.

“Things like walking and talking and eating and feeding, all these things that many of us naturally take for granted because they come so easily, come a little harder for James,” he told PEOPLE at the time. “Everything he has achieved in his life has come through presence and the kind of will that is hard work. He has a lot to inspire.”

In 2024, Farrell started the Colin Farrell Foundation in honor of James. The non-profit organization supports adult children with intellectual disabilities through advocacy, education and innovative programs.

“When your child turns 21, they’re on their own,” the actor explained to PEOPLE. “All the safeguards that were put in place, the special classes, all of that goes away, so you’re left with a young adult who should be an integrated part of our modern society, and is often neglected.”

Farrell added: “I want the world to be good to James. I want the world to treat him with kindness and respect.”
