Colin Powell was born in New York, New York on April 5, 1937. His name was Colin Luther Powell. He was of American descent. Powell was of mixed (Jamaican-American) descent and was born under the sign of Gemini.
Powell was born in the South Bronx, the son of Jamaican immigrants Maud Ariel and Luther Theophilus Powell. He attended Morris High School and graduated in 1954. Luther worked as a shipper, while Maud worked as a seamstress. Despite his parents’ admonitions to “pursue a good education,” Powell remained an average student throughout high school and was never considered a minority.
Powell worked at a local baby furniture store while in school and later served as a Shabbos goy, helping Orthodox families. After high school, he attended the City College of New York and earned a BS in Geological Engineering in 1958. From 1987 to 1989, he served as the sixteenth National Security Advisor of the United States. In 1989, he served as commander of the US Ground Forces Command. He also served as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993. His service spanned 35 years, with his last military assignment as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, serving from October 1989 to September 1993.
