Luther worked as a shipper, while Maud worked as a seamstress. After returning from Vietnam, he was a White House Fellow from 1972 to 1973 under President Richard Nixon. He served at Fort Carson in the 1980s and then became a senior military aide to Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. From 1987 to 1989, he served as the sixteenth National Security Advisor of the United States. In 1989, he served as commander of the US Ground Forces Command. He also served as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993. His service spanned 35 years, with his last military assignment as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, serving from October 1989 to September 1993. Powell founded America’s Promise from 1997. that it will help children from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
