Collin Gosselin Says He Was 'Discharged' from the Marines Because He Was Previously Institutionalized by Mom Kate

Collin Gosselin hit a roadblock in his dream of becoming a United States Marine.

Former Kate Plus 8 The child star, now 20, revealed that she is “no longer” training to join the US military during an interview with Party tonight.

“I was fired,” he explained. “I was nearing the end of my training, very close to graduation. They reviewed the paperwork and found that I had actually been in an institution at one point in my life.”

“And you see, they don’t need any deeper reason. Being in an institution, that’s good enough for [them] discharge [you]”, he added.

Even so, Collin said he is working to appeal the decision because he has “very few other desires in life that would be above being a United States Marine.” For now, the television personality said she plans to study finance at Penn State.

Collin’s parents, Jon and Kate Gosselin, have 22-year-old twins Cara and Madelyn, as well as sextuplets Collina, Alexis, Aaden, Leah, Joel and Hannah. Jon, 47, and Kate, 49, divorced in 2009. Kate eventually won custody of the children and committed Collin to an institution for what she claimed was “unpredictable and violent behavior” when he was 12.

“I didn’t know what was happening. I didn’t know where I was going… It was the biggest fear I’ve probably ever been in my life,” he told ET. “I didn’t even say goodbye [to my siblings].”

While there, Collin claimed that Kate only “came to see me once” for 30 minutes. “The whole time she just lectured me and told me that I destroyed our family,” he stated. “Our family was under the spotlight 24/7… I know very well that the reason I was driven away was to protect my mother’s reputation.”

Kate told PEOPLE in 2016 that Collin has “special needs.” In response, Collin said Party tonight 2022: “It’s unfortunate that my mom, you know, framed me like that as a person. You know, I don’t see those things and I don’t think anyone else does, but if that’s how she sees me then, you know, that’s her point of view.”

Then, on an episode of Vice TV The dark side of the 2000s which aired in July 2023, Collin claimed that his mother “broke the barrier” between his siblings. He also accused Kate of being “abusive” towards him, claiming: “That’s kind of why she sent me. I started telling people what was going on at home and, you know, she heard it and had me put somewhere where I wouldn’t be able to reveal secrets.”

Jon also claimed in the special that he spent $1 million to get Collin out of treatment. He previously told the Daily Mail in 2019 that Collin had no diagnosed medical conditions at the time other than the usual ADHD.

“I never wanted to do this, but I feel cornered and left with no choice. Although it saddens me, I must speak out now,” she wrote partially in time. “My son Collin, who I love with all my heart, has received multiple psychiatric diagnoses over the years. For my safety, his siblings’ safety, and his own well-being, he was institutionalized after years of outpatient treatment that proved inadequate for his needs.”

“Collin’s distorted perception of reality is one of the many issues he’s always struggled with. As many people who have family members struggling with mental health issues can attest, it’s rare and sadly surprising when complete fabrications happen, and this is just one more a heartbreaking aspect of this fight,” she continued. “Unfortunately, I believe Collin remains a very troubled young man who still needs a lot of help. His siblings and I have not been directly involved in his life due to his history of unpredictable behavior and violent tendencies towards us.”

Jon later responded to her statement, telling PEOPLE, “Regarding these brand new false allegations, it seems clear that even today, after not seeing her son since 6th grade, Kate can’t control her abusive words towards him. .Don’t forget that a judge awarded temporary sole legal and physical custody of Collin to his father in 2018. Kate never even showed up in court and never spoke to Collin again, Collin is currently training to serve his country incapacitated. to answer his mother’s callous lies.”
