Bob Barker hosted the competition series for more than three decades until 2007, when he retired and Drew Carey took over. The actor told PEOPLE that he initially turned down the offer to host The price is right but he changed his mind because he enjoyed the feeling behind it.

“One of the show’s producers asked me what my favorite thing to do was,” he told PEOPLE in March 2024. “I say, ‘I like to leave big tips when I go to a restaurant.’ “Well, if you keep working The price is rightyou’ll be able to do this for the rest of your life,’ they said.”

Of The price is right picks its contestants at random from the studio audience, the first step to potentially competing on a game show is participating.

Tickets are available “about a month in advance” of the taping via the On Camera Audiences website. Prospective contestants must submit an inquiry for a specific show date and time in order to attempt to secure entry.

Potential contestants must be at least 18 years old to apply. The form asks for personal information such as name, email address and phone number. After submission, people have to wait to be notified if they got tickets.

Additional jurisdictions may prohibit the selection of participants. Those who appeared on The price is right in the last 10 years or have been on four or more game shows in the last 10 years cannot participate. Contesting candidates are also excluded.

Tickets for The price is right are free, and two to three shows are recorded daily, according to the On Camera Audiences website.

After fans submit a ticket request, they’ll receive an email stating whether they’ve received a priority ticket, line voucher or waitlist spot.

A priority ticket means that entry is fully guaranteed. On the contrary, those who receive a Line Voucher will be admitted to the general queue on a first-come, first-served basis. So, getting into the recording is more likely if the participants arrive early.

However, guests must leave their cell phones and smart watches before exiting. They will also need ID and closed shoes.

If viewers wish to attend more than one taping per day, they will need to ask about availability when registering for the event.

Over 300 audience members were allowed in during the taping, and only nine were invited for a chance to play games and win prizes. Those who are selected usually stand out from the crowd and make a good impression on the production before The price is right begins filming, according to LiveAbout.com.

On The price is right, contestants appear to be chosen by luck, but all audience members undergo a general preliminary evaluation before being selected. Participants receive name tags with identification numbers and are interviewed individually according to production, according to point of sale.

Former The price is right contestant Dainon Haggard revealed on LinkedIn that his “enthusiasm” helped land him a spot on the show. After being called in for a brief interview with the producer, Haggard said he had about “5 seconds to get their attention.”

The price is right contestants are not paid, but have a chance to win money and various prizes.

In the past, contestants have left with a car or two, trips to destinations like New York and Ireland, and items like hot tubs and 3D printers. In terms of cash winnings, a contestant named Michael earned over $260,000 in 2019. TV Insider.

If a player wins a big win, they must fill out the necessary paperwork, including tax forms. According to NerdWallet, cash prizes, merchandise, cars and vacations can all be taxed.
