Comedian Dulcé Sloan Still Wants To Be a Star Trek Klingon: ‘That’s My Dream Job’ (Exclusive)

She is a successful stand-up comedian, a Daily show correspondent and now author. But Dulcé Sloan still wants nothing more than to be a Klingon Star Trek.“I managed to do a Klingon voice [Star Trek: Lower Decks], so I’m closer to that now than I was,” Sloan, 40, tells PEOPLE. “But that’s not me. I’m not in costume. I wasn’t sitting there doing my makeup at four in the morning where they put peanut butter on my forehead…that’s my dream job.” Sloan, who worked as a correspondent for Comedy Central Daily show from 2017, and who Diversity calls “a comic to watch”, reflects on more of his aspirations in a new book, Hello friends!which publishes February 6 from Andscape Books.

“I wanted to call the book, Don’t call it a memoir, I’m only 39 years old,” says Sloan. She looks Hello friends! as a “storybook” detailing her background as a performer, starting with her hometown of Atlanta. Sloan would find her place in high school theater, playing roles like the Fairy Godmother Cinderella and Diva in a musical production from the 80s Star mites.

“It was my first big role in high school, and it was the second semester of my senior year, so I thought, after this, we’re done. Now you gotta go to college, girl.” One of the most memorable parts of her early acting days, Sloan says, was “sucking lemons in class” in an attempt to preserve her voice. Instead, they simply dried out of her throat.

Sloan’s comedy career took off in 2015 when she was named the winner of the Standup NBC Showcase. He will further make his television comedy debut Conan before joining Daily show 2017, where she appeared in sketches like “9-1-1 for White People’s Emergency” and described current events with host Trevor Noah.

Hello friends! talks about the long road to a permanent performer. Sloan reflects on being a black comedian in the industry and reflects on the many odd jobs she’s worked to build her career. She once spent “too much” time learning about Minecraft and Harry Potter while working on children’s birthday parties, for example.

For Trevor Noah of ‘The Daily Show’, laughter is the best aphrodisiac

“If you’re going to be in the arts, especially as a performer, you’re going to have to make money,” she says. “Because when you’re just starting out, people will put you in [opportunities] or exposure, and you can’t put exposure in a tank of gas.” Although the book contains a lot of her signature humor, Sloan says it was an emotional writing process. She includes more emotional moments from her life, including “not so great” memories from school.

“It’s interesting as a kid to know that adults don’t like you just because of who you are,” says Sloan. “It’s a wild thing. It’s interesting as a child of color to know that these white adults take away your opportunities and bully you… and then go to my mother and find out she had to do the same thing.”

While working on the book, Sloan says, “I had to find a way to not be angry at my 25-year-old self for the decisions I was making based on the information I had and who I was at the time.”

“I know there were a lot of decisions I would have made differently, but to make certain decisions, you have to feel a certain way about yourself and have different goals for yourself or really listen to someone,” she continues.

Besides the book, Sloan was busy. She was recently nominated for a GLAAD Award for “Outstanding Variety or Talk Show Episode” for her Daily show interview with RuPaul’s Drag Race star Sasha Colby (Sloan was also a guest host on the 2022 show).

Sloan also co-hosts the podcast Stand up with Daily show writer Josh Johnson and runs a lip gloss company with fellow comedian Lace Larrabee. The brand, Giggle Gloss, sells lip gloss with names like “Purse Vodka” and “I’ll Show You Crazy” that were inspired by the founder’s jokes. The brand is designed so that the comics have “merchandise to sell on the road” and to show their personality as a performer.
