While Los Angeles and New York may have completely different December climates, wherever the Groban family gathers for the holidays brings magic.
Josh Groban spoke with PEOPLE at the Little Big Town Christmas at the Opry event on Oct. 4, sharing his favorite recent holiday memories.
Groban says that he always celebrates Christmas at his parents’ house in Los Angeles. Last year, however, his family had to adjust while the 43-year-old played his Tony-nominated title role in Sweeney Todd on Broadway.
“They all came to New York, and we tried to recreate it in my apartment,” he says. “It was a fun memory because we were all together in a new place and it was snowing.”
Overall, Groban’s favorite part of Christmas is the “fellowship”. During his childhood, he says, he had “really fun Christmases,” partly because of his mother’s penchant for decorating. The most important thing for him, however, is the opportunity that the holiday offers to gather his family.
“When we are children, it’s like we have breaks from school, but then as adults. . . my brother and I both travel a lot as part of our jobs [Christmas] it’s the time of year when we can all sit around the same table, and we can all just be together and let the world disappear for a little while,” he tells PEOPLE.

The multi-hyphenate has other holiday plans this year. His CBS holiday special Josh Groban and friends are going home for the holidayswhich airs on December 20 at 9 p.m., will feature performances by him, Jennifer Hudson, Tori Kelly, James Bay and The War and Treaty.
The special will also focus attention on America’s foster care system. The show will also include a family that adopts a child on air.
“I am honored and excited to host the show with old and new friends to celebrate the unity and togetherness of the holidays,” Groban wrote in a statement. “It’s especially important because it’s going to spread the word about adoption and it’s going to show the most amazing kids.”
“I can’t wait for everyone to watch with their families, sing along and hopefully make room in their hearts and homes for a child in need,” he said.
