Russell, 44, last appeared on the small screen in August during an appearance on Channel 4’s Big Fat Quiz of Telly.

Speaking about his departure from television, Russell said: “I don’t do television anymore, I just do stand-up and my podcast.”

The prankster went on to tell the Have A Word podcast: “I ran well, I just prefer to stand.

“I’ve been all over the world and it’s been fun.”

Russell said “there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing” than putting together a full set and going on tour.

He added: “TV is fun, but it’s not that fun. I couldn’t do the book writing because I don’t want to sit and entertain myself, but doing stand-up is what I love to do.

“It’s not party for the board, it’s your dictatorship…

“The audience is like that brilliant jury that lets you know through laughter whether it works or not.”

Russell previously hosted his BBC series Good News, which ran for 10 series between 2009 and 2015.

In 2017, he launched The Russell Howard Hour for Sky TV, which had six series and a Covid-themed spin-off filmed from his home.

Howard was also a series regular on the now-defunct satirical show Mock of the Week with Dara Ó Briain.

He hosts two podcasts – Russell Howard’s Five Brilliant Things and the football-themed GoalLess.
