During Show Jennifer Hudson, Common seemingly confirmed his romance with Hudson as she asked him about his relationship status. The actor laughed before replying that he is actually dating someone. Although he didn’t say Hudson’s name, they all joined in on the teasing.
The couple first sparked dating rumors in 2022, when they were working on their movie together Breathe, but they have known each other for a long time. Over the years, the two have been seen hanging out at various events, including award shows and charity events.
While the two haven’t directly addressed the relationship rumors so far, they have made a number of appearances together, including sitting courtside at basketball games.

One of Common and Hudson’s first appearances together was in 2014 when they both attended the Stand Up to Cancer event in Hollywood. The duo posed together on the red carpet in Stand Up to Cancer t-shirts.

In February 2015, the two were spotted sitting together at the Pre-GRAMMY Gala and Salute to Industry Icons presented by Clive Davis and the Recording Academy. They were both in the running for the Grammys that year; Common is nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Album, and Hudson is nominated for Best R&B Performance.
During the ceremony, Common also performed his hit song “Glory” with John Legend, which was featured in the 2014 film. Selma.

March 24, 2018: Common and Jennifer Hudson at the March for Our Lives

Hudson and Common snapped a sweet photo together backstage while attending the 69th NBA All-Star Game as part of NBA All-Star Weekend 2020. The event was held in their shared hometown of Chicago, Illinois.
August 2022: Common and Jennifer Hudson fueled dating rumors
In May 2022, it was announced that Common and Hudson would join forces on screen for a new film titled Breathe, in which the two play husband and wife on earth rendered uninhabitable due to lack of oxygen.
A few months after their selection was announced, the couple fueled dating rumors when Common and Hudson were reportedly seen together in Philadelphia and Chicago.

However, a month later, Hudson clarified their outings while speaking with Party tonight.
“People make up their own stories about it and it’s like, OK, you know how you feel,” she said when asked about the rumors. “We were doing a movie together and he played my husband. We have to eat between those moments.”
February 22, 2023: Common and Jennifer Hudson have dinner together
In early 2023, Hudson and Common were once again the subject of dating rumors as they were photographed leaving Nobu restaurant in Malibu. In a photo taken outside the restaurant, multiple dashes could be seen walking side by side as they made their way to their car.
March 13, 2023: Jennifer Hudson celebrates Common’s birthday
A month later, Hudson sparked dating rumors as she shared a birthday tribute to Common on social media. Along with their throwback photo from the BBA All-Star Game, Hudson wrote, “Team Jhud, please help me wish a happy birthday to one of the brightest lights, legends of Chicago and hip hop, the one and only @common!”
In his Instagram story, Common showed his appreciation for Hudson’s call-out and reposted the image, adding, “Thank you!”
August 2023: Jennifer Hudson calls Common a ‘beautiful man’
In August 2023, Hudson spoke briefly about Common when asked by TMZ about their relationship status. “The rumors say a lot,” Hudson said with a shrug when asked about a potential romance. “But he’s a beautiful man, I’ll grant you that. That’s for sure.”
The reporter also told the powerhouse singer that she and Common are a “cute couple,” and Hudson simply replied, “Thanks.”
September 9, 2023: Common and Jennifer Hudson are seeing each other MJ: The musical together
In September 2023, Instagram account for MJ: The musical revealed that Common and Hudson went to see the show in Chicago while posting pictures of the pair with the cast, including Roman star Wellington Banks.
“What a thrill to perform for @iamjhud, @common and @donaldlawrence in Chicago! We loved that you were all at the theater. #MJTheMusicalTour 🔥” reads the photos on the show’s Instagram account.
December 30, 2023: Common and Jennifer Hudson at a Chicago Bulls game

January 22, 2024: Common confirms his relationship with Jennifer Hudson on her show

Nearly two years after sparking dating rumors, Common appeared to finally confirm their relationship when he appeared on Hudson’s talk show, Show Jennifer Hudson.
When she asked him about his relationship status on the show, the actor laughed before replying that he was actually dating someone. Although he didn’t say Hudson’s name, they all joined in on the teasing.
He also presented her with a large bouquet of flowers before planting a kiss on her cheek in photos shared by the network.
Common later spoke about his appearance on the Show Jennifer Hudson (and going public with Hudson) during an interview on Today with Hoda and Jenna.
“We had a little fun,” Common said of the interview. “I felt like, why not just be loving and honest with who I am and who we are. And it was good, it was fun, we had a good time.”
He said he is a “very private” person when it comes to his personal life and “things that are sacred” but the couple had “a good time” on Hudson’s show.
