Connie Smith was born in Elkhart, Indiana on August 14, 1941. She is a well-known songwriter and performer. Although born in Indiana, she spent most of her early years in West Virginia and eventually immigrated to Ohio.

Both parents were from West Virginia: Hobart Meador (father) and Wilma Meador (mother). When Smith was a child, her father was cruel, causing her to suffer a mental breakdown during adolescence. She began singing locally in West Virginia.

She was valedictorian of her class at Salem-Liberty High School in 1959. When she was twenty-two years old, she won a talent contest at the Frontier Ranch Country Music Park.
