On March 9, 2008, McGregor made his professional mixed martial arts debut and defeated Gary Morris in a second-round technical knockout. However, after several fights, McGregor reconsidered his MMA career, but his mother called his coach and convinced him to pursue MMA. McGregor lost to Joseph Duffy for the second time in his career. However, in 2011 and 2012, McGregor won the CWFC Featherweight and Lightweight Championships on an eight-fight winning streak. On July 11, 2015, Conor faced Chad Mendes in the interim featherweight title fight. A total of 16,019 people attended the event, with live prizes of US$7.2 million. He won the fight by technical knockout to win the UFC interim featherweight championship. 2016
McGregor, who was on a winning streak and looking to become the first UFC dual weight champion, competed for the UFC lightweight title on March 5, 2016 at UFC 196. McGregor was supposed to fight Rafael dos Anjos, but he withdrew from the fight on February 23 due to a broken foot. Several contestants were asked to compete, but no one was ready to compete on such a short notice. Finally, The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 winner and former UFC lightweight title contender Nate Diaz steps up to face McGregor. At 4 minutes and 12 seconds into the match, McGregor was choked naked by Nate Diaz. Both men received Fight of the Night bonuses for their performances. A rematch was scheduled for May 2016, with McGregor winning by majority decision. The fight broke records and became the highest-selling pay-per-view event in UFC history, with nearly 1.65 million buys.
2017
Conor McGregor won the lightweight title and decided to take a break from the UFC and spend time with his family as his fiancé is due to give birth to their first child in 2017. McGregor campaigned in early 2017 for a boxing match scheduled between him and Mayweather, the American professional boxer. The match took place on August 26, 2017, and ended in the 10th round when Mayweather knocked out McGregor. Floyd Mayweather won the fight by technical knockout. The fight reportedly brought them more money than they promised. Mayweather earned $280 million from the fight, while McGregor earned $130 million.
2018
McGregor was stripped of the lightweight title on April 7, 2018 due to inactivity. McGregor announced his return to UFC competition and challenged Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight championship. The fight took place on October 6, 2018, and he lost in the fourth round.
2019
In March 2019, McGregor announced his retirement on social media, but the announcement was seen as a way to gain ownership of the company. UFC President Dana White believes in an interview that McGregor’s retirement will not last long and he will fight again in the future.
2020
McGregor faced Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 on January 18, 2020. McGregor won via technical knockout in just 40 seconds of the first round. McGregor became the first fighter to hold knockout spots in the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions. On June 6, 2020, McGregor officially decided to retire.

- On November 10, 2017, during a match between SBG Ireland’s Charlie Ward and John Redmond at Bellator 187, McGregor assaulted referee Marc Goddard . Ward knocked out Redmond, and McGregor jumped out of the cage and into the ring to celebrate Ward’s victory before the fight began. The battle is officially over. He further attacked the referee when he asked him to leave the ring.
- In April 2018, McGregor attacked Khabib Nurmagomedov as he boarded the bus leaving Barclays Center Arena for UFC 223. McGregor ran across the bus and threw a metal device through the bus window. UFC fighters Chiesa and Borg were injured due to broken glass and were taken to the nearest hospital. Arrest warrants were issued for McGregor and his accomplices in the attack. McGregor was later charged with assault, criminal mischief, threats and reckless conduct. He was released on $50,000 bail, then performed five days of community service and must attend anger management classes.
- On October 6, 2018, Khabib Nurmagomedov jumped out of the ring and lunged at Conor McGregor’s training partner, Dillon Danis. In response, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) withheld Khabib’s fight fees and filed formal complaints against McGregor and Khabib.
