The British Geological Survey said the earthquake hit the district at 12.50pm today at a depth of 13km.

A spokesman said: “Reports have been received from residents in Helston, Penzance and Camborne in Cornwall that this event has been felt.”

Earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or lower are usually not felt, but can be recorded by a seismograph.

Damage to buildings and infrastructure usually does not occur until the magnitude of the earthquake reaches somewhere above four or five degrees.
