Coronation Street star Cheryl Murray dies aged 71 after 6 years playing Gail Potter’s best friend Suzie Birchall – The Sun

CORONATION Street star Cheryl Murray has died aged 71.

She played Gail Potter’s best friend Suzie Birchall on Cobblestone between 1977 and 1979 and again in 1983.

Her character left Weatherfield and went under the bright lights of London.

Cheryl then appeared in the music video for Morrissey’s hit song Everyday is Like Sunday.

And starred in the classic 1980s BBC series Hi-de-Hi! and Sorry!

In 2000, she supported the Sun’s Save the Rovers campaign.

In 2014, Cheryl was a guest in the ITV documentary Gail and Me: 40 years of Gail on Coronation Street.

DEFEATING DIAGNOSIS

She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and had her first MS attack while working on Coronation Street.

After a spell on fellow ITV show Emmerdale, Cheryl was forced to retire from acting aged just 46 in 1998 due to illness.

The actress was born in Liverpool in 1952 and died on September 23 last year.

In a statement to The Sun today, ITV said: “We are saddened by the recent death of Cheryl Murray, our thoughts are with her family and friends.

“Her vivid portrayal of Gail’s best friend and lodger Elsie Tanner, Suzie Birchall, will live on in the memories of Coronation Street fans long after Suzie has left the cobblestones for the bright lights of London.”
