Profession
Syed Akbaruddin joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1985. Since joining IFS, Syed has held various positions in the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. From 1995 to 1998, he served as First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, mainly responsible for the reform of the United Nations Security Council and peacekeeping work. He also served as a member of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) from 1997 to 1998. He is fluent in Arabic and has served as an advisor to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Saeed also served as Consul General of India in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 2000 to 2004. Prior to that, he served as First Secretary in Riyadh and as Second and Third Secretary in Cairo, Egypt. From 2006 to 2011, he served as representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. During this period, he also served as Chief of the External Relations and Policy Coordination Unit and as Special Assistant to the IAEA Director General. Saeed served as the spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2015. He is also a member of India’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly and various summits and ministerial-level multilateral and bilateral meetings. He has effectively used social media tools to expand the reach of public diplomacy.
In 2015, he was appointed as Additional Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, India. Saeed was appointed India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in 2017.
