Could Rose Have Saved Jack in Titanic? Resurfaced TikTok of Kate Winslet Reignites the Debate

Kate Winslet fully agrees with many Titanic fans who noticed that Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) was definitely able to step on that floating piece of debris at the end of the 1997 Oscar-winning film.

The actress stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, September 24, to discuss our new film, Leeand to mark the occasion, the show’s official TikTok account posted a hilarious recap of Winslet’s December 2017 guest appearance.

At that time, Titanic was approaching its 20th anniversary, and Colbert spiced up Winslet’s delightful game with questions from his staff about the James Cameron-directed film. One question gripped her Titanic character, Rose, tasked with a scene in which she is left floating on an ornate wooden panel after the titular ship sinks, while DiCaprio’s Jack freezes to death in icy water.

“You famously say ‘I’ll never let you go, Jack,'” Colbert remarked. “But you have!”

“I lied,” Winslet admitted. “I agree,” she added, turning seriously to the studio audience. “I’m lying. I’m completely lying. I raise my hand and let him go.”

“Besides, he should have tried harder to get to that door,” she continued, mentioning a small flaw in the otherwise beloved film that many fans have pointed out in the decades since its release.

To prove the point, Winslet then suggested that she and Colbert re-enact the scene, with her sprawled across his desk and the host folding his arms from the floor below.

“Promise me, Rose!” Colbert said. “Let me get up that door with you!”

“Come on, dear! There is room for two!” Winslet replied.

Colbert then jumped onto the table next to the Oscar winner as the crowd cheered and Winslet triumphantly exclaimed, “Yes!”

The cast of ‘Titanic’: Where are they now?

Earlier this year, a wooden panel on which Rose – but not Jack – floated was among a stockpile of historic Hollywood props up for auction. In a March 25 press release, Heritage Auctions noted that Titanic prop fetched the highest price, beating Indiana Jones’ whip, Princess Leia’s blaster and the ax from Radiation.

“Wooden panel from Titanic that saved Rose — but, controversially, not Jack — was the king of the auction,” Heritage Auctions said, delving into Winslet’s character, “realizing that $718,750 would top the five-day event.” The prop is now on display at the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., before heading to the Titanic Museum in Branson, Mo.
