Crime-Solving Germaphobe Adrian Monk Is Back Post-COVID in Mr. Monk’s Last Case: ‘Like Riding a Bicycle’

Everyone’s favorite obsessive-compulsive detective returns for what could be his last case.

IN The Last Case of Mr. Monk: A Monk Movie, premiering December 8 on the Peacock, Tony Shalhoub returns to his role as Adrian Monk, the germophobic detective he played on the USA Network series Monk for eight seasons.

Time hasn’t exactly been kind to Monk since the show ended in 2009. The detective has had it tough during the pandemic, as seen in the first episode of Peacock Home variety in May 2020, washing his hands while singing “99 Bottles of Beer on The Wall” and putting fresh produce in the dishwasher.

Mr. Monk’s latest case begins shortly after the lifting of pandemic-related restrictions. The trailer features Monk, Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford), Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard) and Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) talking to Rick Eden (James Purefoy) at the lavish estate.

“Big Adrian Monk. For a while there you were solving a big case every week,” Rick says.

“I couldn’t have done it myself,” Monk replies before joking, “I could have, but it would have taken longer.”

“Monk is back for his first film and last case,” the trailer says. “It’s a different world. He fits in perfectly.”

“I have traumatic symptoms, unprecedented in psychiatric history,” Monk explains as the trailer shows him opening a tidy medicine cabinet full of prescriptions.

“He’s afraid of heights. It’s his second biggest fear after germs,” says Randy.

“Actually, it’s germs, needles, birds, then height,” adds Natalie.

Moving on to another scene, Molly (Caitlin McGee) begs her stepfather “to help her” investigate the mysterious death of her fiancé. “It was not an accident. He was killed,” she says.

In another scene, Monk is in the passenger seat of a car and tells Natalie to make a very sharp turn. “Turn, turn, turn, turn! Here’s the bomb!” Monk says.

“I knowing there’s a bomb! You’re not helping!” he exclaims before crashing into another car and sheepishly adding, “We should leave a message.”

Monk does what he does best (besides solving crimes) in the following scenes, channeling his germophobic behavior to comic effect: He points out to a woman that a commercial hand sanitizer dispenser in a public building is actually his private property, and aggressive use of hand wipes along with Natalie, Randy and Leland.

At the airport terminal, Molly shows a couple sharing hand sanitizer. “It’s all you,” he says of the couple washing their hands.

“They’re going to hate it,” he replies.

When Leland asked Monk how it felt to be working again, he said it was “like riding a bike.”

Moving on to the therapy session, Monk’s current therapist Dr. Neven Bell (Hector Elizondo) adds, “I’m glad to hear that.”
