Cruel Intentions at 25: All the Times Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair Have Recreated Their Iconic Kiss

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair’s friendship was sealed with a kiss.

During the 25 years since the actresses starred in the Cruel intentions — a film that featured an instantly iconic lip lock between two female actors — the friends recreated the moment several times.

“We do it all the time,” Gellar, 46, joked about her friend’s cuddling in an interview with PEOPLE in 2022. “I love that girl.”

Written and directed by Roger Kumble Cruel intentionswhich has become a cult classic since its premiere in March 1999, is a contemporary reimagining of the play Dangerous connections (itself based on an 18th century French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses) located on the Upper East Side in New York.

At the 2000 MTV Movie Awards, the two actresses won the award for best kiss. As is tradition, Gellar – who also won best female performance at the ceremony – and Blair took to the stage to accept their popcorn trophies and recreate the kiss for the audience.

But that’s not the last time Gellar and Blair, who have remained close friends over the past year, have reminded fans of the iconic smooch.

In the clip to remember the award, Blair reflected about how their steamy moment has affected countless fans, especially in the LGBTQ+ community. “I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people for so long is not just because of the initial shock value,” she said, “but because it was a catalyst for a lot of young people that helped them understand certain aspects of their sexuality and helped people feel comfortable to be who they really are.”

Also in 2020, the old cast members shared a photo of Blair placing a smooch on Gellar’s masked face. The “birthday kisses,” Gellar wrote in the post, were in honor of Blair’s 48th.
