Dadi Janki

Janki Kripalani or “Dadi Janki” is a famous Indian spiritual teacher. She is the administrative head of “Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Godly Spiritual University”.

She was born on Saturday, January 1, 1916 (she died aged 104) in the northern Indian province of Sindh (now part of Pakistan). Her zodiac sign is Capricorn. She has studied until the fourth grade.

Dadi Janki has been spiritually inclined since childhood. She often listened to her father and uncle reciting Ramcharitmanas. She learned about Sukhmani Sahib from a neighbor. Dadi Janki and her father often traveled in horse-drawn carriages to tell people about the benefits of vegetarianism.

In her teenage years, she met Brahma Baba (the founder of the Brahma Kumaris), who formed a group of spiritual devotees called “Om Mandli”. Dadi Janki was very impressed and inspired by the group and wanted to join them, but was resisted by his family.

Later, she got an arranged marriage, but her heart and mind were not in the marriage. She wanted to join ‘Om Mandli’ and work for the welfare of the people. In 1937, at the age of 21, she made a bold decision to run away from home and join “Om Mandli” (now Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University). The organization was then led by Dada Lekhraj or “Brahma Baba” as he was fondly called by his followers. From 1937 to 1951, the number of believers increased from 120 to 400, most of whom were women. In 1950, the Brahma Kumaris organization moved from Karachi, Pakistan to Mount Abu, India.

Dadi Janki traveled to different cities in India imparting spiritual education. Brahma Kumari, Mateshwari (fondly called Mom) was Dadi Janki’s mentor during his service. In 1965, my mother left her body and later in 1969, Brahma Baba passed away. The entire responsibility of running the organization rests with the Dadis (elder Brahma Kumaris), including Dadi Janki.

In 1974, Duddy Yankee visited London for the first time and began spiritual services in the West. Earlier, she was hesitant; she didn’t understand English. With her faith in God, she traveled to London, where the first Brahma Kumaris Center in Europe later opened. Today, the Brahma Kumaris spiritual organization has more than 8,500 centers in more than 130 countries.

In August 2007, after the death of Dadi Prakashmani Ji (then Chief Administrative Officer of Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University BKWSU), Dadi Janki ) becomes the chief administrative officer of the organization.

He passed away at 2 a.m. on March 27, 2020 (Friday). It is reported that he died of natural causes.

  • In 1997, a charitable trust named after her was established in London as the Janki Global Healthcare Foundation.
  • In 2004, King Abdullah II of Jordan awarded her the Order of Al Istiklal (Order of Independence), First Class, in recognition of her humanitarian contributions to the world.
  • In 2015, she was appointed as the brand ambassador of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan” by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
