Given that Harrenhal is the largest castle in Westeros, many would have wondered how Daemon managed to control the castle on his own. Interestingly, Daemon abandoned his more bloodthirsty tendencies and instead used tactics of subterfuge to take control of Harrenhal without an army or much bloodshed. Instead, Daemon used fear to his advantage, and more pertinently, the fear of dragons that the people of Westeros had.

When Harrenhal burned, Aegon sent Balerion the Dark Lord to burn down the castle’s spires from the highest point. Daemon inflicts this fear on Simon Strong, the Castellan of Harrenhal in Larys Strong’s absence, through Calathes, leading to him becoming Steward of the castle.

After Daemon captures Harrenhal Fire and Bloodthe houses of the riverlands began to openly pledge their support to Rhaenyra and the Black Men. This led to two key conflicts in the Dance of the Dragons, the Battle of the Firemills and the Taking of the Stone Hedge. These two battles involved two of Westeros’s oldest houses: the Brackens and the Blackwoods. The latter swore fealty to Rhaenyra, while the former swore fealty to Aegon.
Unbeknownst to the Brackens, however, Daemon and a host of riverland families sworn to Rhaenyra had laid siege to Stonehedge in their absence…
This led to civil war in the Riverlands. The Brackens and Blackwoods first clashed at the Mill, known as the Battle of Burning Mill, a battle that forced the Brackens to retreat to their quarters at Stonehedge. However, unbeknownst to the Brackens, Daemon and a large group of riverland houses loyal to Rhaenyra had laid siege to Stonehedge in their absence. The capture of Stonehedge and the hostages they took led to the Brackens withdrawing their support to Aegon, ending any support for the Greens in the Riverlands.
Daemon left Harrenhal when Criston Cole and Aemond Targaryen marched to retake it. Daemon took the opportunity to ride to King’s Landing on his Caraxixis as the Green Army was marching towards Harrenhal. He and Rhaenyra successfully recaptured King’s Landing from the Green Army, but this happened after several other battles, which were likely fought in Dragon House Season 2.
