Dan Levy on Turning Down Role of Ken in Barbie: ‘That Was a Bad, Bad Day’ (Exclusive)

Dan Levy knows that people still think of him as David Rose sometimes.

His character in Schitt’s Creek — series 2015-2020. about a once-wealthy family exiled to a small, rural town co-created by Levy and his father, Eugene — was a pandemic that swept the 2020 Emmys. It launched Levy as a style and meme star. (The GIF of his TV sister saying, “Yuck, David,” is still popular. “People would even scream out the windows at me from passing cars, ‘Yuck!’” he tells PEOPLE with a laugh.)

Levy agrees with people who sometimes confuse him with David. He’s coming from a good place, he admits: “If you create something that lives with people to the point where they forget who you are, I’ll never be offended by that.”

Levy, 40, reveals that he almost landed another, perhaps slightly fancier, iconic role, one that would have lived deep in everyone’s minds last summer: one of Ken’s in the 2023 blockbuster. Barbie. Unfortunately, he had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts.

“Logistically it didn’t work out despite desperate attempts,” he explains. “So yeah, I guess I was technically unavailable for that.”

Levy says he’s a big fan Barbie director Greta Gerwig.

“I think Greta had such a wonderfully bizarre and magical aesthetic idea of ​​what the film was,” he says of the Oscar nominee. “I would love to play in her world. I think she is one of the great, young authors of our time.”

The FOMO was real and lingering, says Levy.

“Does it haunt me while I sleep at night? Sometimes. It’s not like it’s not one of the greatest movies of all time. It was a tough, tough day,” he recalls.

Good grief, his new film, which he wrote, directed and stars in, is now streaming on Netflix. In it, Levy moves on Schitt’s Creeks‘theatre of the absurd and deep into the shadows of the bereaved. He plays an artist who overcomes the death of his husband (played by Luke Evans) by traveling to Paris with his two best friends.

“As someone who is often single, your friends are the loves of your life.” says Levy. “The friends I have are for life. I love them very much, to the extent that I wrote a film about that love and how it can save us in the most difficult times.”
