Dan Rapoport Was Found Dead In Washington DC

Dan Rapoport, a Latvian-American businessman, was found dead in Washington DC on August 14th after an alleged suicide jump from a skyscraper. Rapoport, who lived in exile in the United States, was a prominent opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin. His body was found on the sidewalk in front of the 2400 M Apartments in the Georgetown neighborhood, where he reportedly died in a free fall. Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a “jumper” on Sunday at 6 p.m. After the fall, Rapoport was transported to the hospital, where his death was confirmed.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police, Brianna Burch, told The Independent that foul play is not suspected at this time and the medical examiner’s findings are pending. A damaged smartphone, headphones, glasses, driver’s license and $2,620 in cash were found at the scene.

Dan Rapoport’s wife, Alena Rapoport, believes that her husband did not commit suicide.

Yuniya Pugacheva, former editor of the Russian version of Tatler magazine, announced the news of Dan Rapoport’s death on Telegram. Pugačova said there was a farewell note attached to his beloved dog that was discovered in a local park after Rapoport’s fall. The former Tatler editor also claimed to have seen Rapoport in a London pub in May. Pugačeva also claimed that Rapoport’s wife had left him at that time.

Alena Rapoport, Dan Rapoport’s widow, rejected the above claims, telling the Russian business news channel RBC that she does not think her husband committed suicide:

“There were no messages, no suicide, no trip to London or no departure.”

What did Dan Rapoport stand for?

Dan Rapoport, 52, was a Moscow businessman best known as an investment banker and nightclub owner. In 2012, he was expelled from Russia. The late billionaire was the owner of the Soho Rooms nightclub in Moscow. Rapoport lived in Kiev, Ukraine, with his wife Alena and their child from 2016 to early 2022. During the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, however, the investor moved his daughter and Ukrainian wife to Denmark before returning to Washington, DC. Alena Rapoport, his widow, reportedly told RBC that after evacuating his wife and children, Rapoport returned to Ukraine to support the nation. She further said that they planned to meet later in the United States.

Criticism of Vladimir Putin

Rapoport was reportedly forced to flee Moscow in 2012 because of his support for Putin’s most prominent opponent and opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Although several media outlets first reported on it, most such contributions appear to have been subsequently deleted. Rapoport has loudly criticized the Russian Kremlin. According to the Moscow Post, he may also be linked to the Alfa Group, which was previously linked to Navalny.
