Dan + Shay Joke Their Joint Coaching Role on The Voice Will ‘Break Up the Band’: ‘The Power of Two’ (Exclusive)

Dan + Shay come as the first trainers Vote.

On a coach outing ahead of Monday’s season 25 premiere, the country music duo opened up about their expectations for the new season — and revealed whether they foresee any chair fights.

“It’s going to break up the band,” Dan Smyers, 36, jokes to PEOPLE.

Shay Mooney, 32, adds: “That will be it for us.”

This season it will be the first time Vote has a common chair for double carriages.

In all seriousness, Smyers says, “No, this is great. This is such a cool opportunity for us, and we’ve been fans of the show for a long time. To come here with [fellow coaches] Ivan [Legend]Reba [McEntire] and Chance [the Rapper] – we are their fans as artists and as people.”

“We’re still trying to figure out two chairs and one button, but when someone pushes that button, you turn either way, so you have to get used to it,” he adds.

The duo – who appeared as advisers on the show in season 20 – also joke that they may have to fake a smile if one pushes a button and the other disagrees.

“You better have a smile on your face when you turn around like, ‘This is what I was hoping we’d do,'” Mooney says with a smile on his face.

He continues, “I feel like we have the power of two. We have a perfect democracy between us. I feel like if we both love something, it’s going to be really great. We use that to our advantage.”

As for what they bring to the table as coaches, Mooney says they have an “in-the-box thing” and are excited to get into the studio and bounce ideas off their contestants.

“We’ve been doing this for 10 years. Watching these artists try to get to where they want to be – Dan and I have done it ourselves,” he says. “When we first met, we would go into the studio and realize that… I was a good singer when we met. But Dan made me a great singer [by] pushing me beyond the limits I knew existed.”

At the end of the day, though, they’re excited to be a part of it and admit they’re “learning.”

Vote premieres Monday, February 26 at 8:00 PM ET on NBC and will be available to stream on Peacock the following day.
