Daniel Radcliffe Spotlights Harry Potter Stunt Double Paralyzed in ‘Terrible’ Accident in Emotional Doc Trailer

Daniel Radcliffe shares the story of the man who helped him fly like Harry Potter.

HBO released a trailer for the documentary on Wednesday David Holmes: The Boy Who Livedabout David Holmes, Radcliffe’s stuntman from the film Harry Potter movies.

Holmes was a teenage gymnast when he started doing stunts on Harry Potter films and met Radcliffe, now 34, as a child. He worked on each of the eight Potter films, but an accident on the set during filming in 2010 Deathly Hallows: Part 1 left Holmes paralyzed.

The trailer opens with Holmes, who has been in a wheelchair since the accident, reminiscing about working as a stuntman. Archive footage shows his skills as a gymnast and how he and other stuntmen spend time with Harry Potteractors and crew. Clips from past years show how that experience affected Holmes.

“This terrible thing happened to Dave, but I don’t want to make it sound like his life is a tragedy,” Radcliffe says in the trailer. “The way his life affected the lives of the people around him means it’s the furthest thing from the imagination.”

Holmes calls Radcliffe’s lead understudy “the best job in the world,” during the trailer, and Radcliffe adds that Holmes “seemed like a cool older brother” during production.

“Like Daniel and [David’s] closest stunt colleagues come together to support David and his family in their time of need, David’s extraordinary spirit of resilience becomes their greatest source of strength and inspiration,” reads the documentary’s synopsis.

The film features “candid personal footage shot over the past decade, behind-the-scenes footage of Holmes’ stunt work, scenes from his current life and intimate interviews with David, Daniel Radcliffe, friends, family and former crew” to share his story, according to the synopsis.

The trailer contains footage of the sequence Potter actors. Tom Felton is seen posing with Radcliffe and Holmes in one photo, along with James and Oliver Phelps, Matthew Lewis, Bonnie Wright and Rupert Grint, as Holmes says he was able to “find the light in the darkest place” after his injuries.

Both Radcliffe and Holmes are executive producers of the documentary, which takes its title from the nickname applied to Harry Potter throughout the franchise. The film was directed by Dan Hartley, a director who worked on the crew for each of them Potter movies.

David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived premieres on HBO on November 15 at 9:00 PM ET and will air on Max.
