Mark Peel (Campanile, Prawn, etc.), a well-known neighbourhood chef and resident of Longwood Highlands, was asked to participate in the television competition series “Beat Bobby Flay,” in which chefs compete first against one another and then against the show’s celebrity host to produce a winning dish for the show’s judges, back in March of 2018.
When Peel went to record the episode, it came out that one of the producers had previously collaborated with Peel’s wife, Daphne Brogdon, who is well known as an actor, comedian, blogger, and the former host of her own food show, “Daphne Dishes”…and they also invited her to record one episode.
Peel, whose “Beat Bobby Flay” episode ultimately aired in July of this year, unfortunately failed to advance past the first round of the competition.Brogdon stated to the Buzz that her objective was to surpass Peel’s performance and at the very least advance to round two when she taped her episode two months later.
In order to do that, she claimed, she carefully practised, working with her culinary partner Nancy Silverton to perfect possibilities for her first-round dish as well as a list of potential dishes that might be selected for a finalist round, should she go that far.
The second round of the competition was rather more difficult. In addition to competing against Flay himself, the winner of round one is kept in the dark about the food they will be making from the pre-supplied list of options.
Many of the meals on the round two potential menus, according to Brogdon, are chicken-based, and she was hoping for a chance to make a healthier version of Chinese orange chicken. However, the meal actually ordered during the recording was a Cubano sandwich, a unique take on the traditional grilled gammon and cheese that Brogdon is considerably less accustomed to.
In preparing the candidates for the competition, the producers, according to Brogdon, heavily urged them to consider “what makes it stand out” when crafting their dishes.
The entire length of the recording, according to Brogdon, she felt as though she were taking part in a “sporting event,” her adrenaline surging. She acknowledges that she struggled a little bit with the huge chunk of pork she was given for her Cubano in round two.
“I didn’t butcher the pork well,” she said. I had never begun with such a large work. Additionally, she said that she had never timed the meat-cutting procedure when practising the recipe from the list of options in the days leading up to the tape; instead, she had always clocked herself using pre-cut meat, which also caused her to stumble in front of the cameras.
