Darren Bailey Is Facing Backlash After He Compared Abortion To The Holocaust

In a republished 2017 interview, Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey compared abortion to the Holocaust. In the video, while running for a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 2017, the 56-year-old politician, who is now a state senator, opposes abortion rights, especially in situations of incest or sexual violence. The only exception, he said in a Facebook video posted on October 12, 2017, is to allow abortion if the mother’s life is in danger. He made the following connection between abortion and the Holocaust:

“I think abortion is one of the worst injustices today and I believe it will be one of the greatest horrors until the end of time.” The attempted genocide of the Jews during World War II pales in comparison to the number of lives lost to abortion after it was legalized.”

Bailey’s disputed video became public because the Forward republished it in an article. He was born and raised in Louisville, Illinois, according to his website. Darren Bailey is an Illinois state senator representing the 55th legislative district. Former US President Donald Trump endorsed him in the Republican race. Bailey was able to defeat his Democratic opponent, JB Pritzker, in part because Democratic organizations expected him to be a weaker candidate in the general election.

Darren Bailey tries to justify his statement about abortion and the Holocaust.

Eliza Glezer, a spokeswoman for Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, asked Bailey for a statement about his “violent anti-Semitism” and “hate speech” after his 2017 video went viral.

In an interview with CBS News, she stated:

“Equating the physical freedom of women with the systematic mass killing of Jews is anti-Semitic and dishonorable.” Darren Bailey’s disgusting assertion that a woman deciding her own reproductive destiny is worse than the Nazi slaughter of six million Jews offends Illinoisans around the world.”

The Midwest chapter of the Anti-Defamation League also issued a statement after Bailey’s video went viral. The group announced on their Twitter account:

“Holocaust and abortion are not synonymous.” Such remarks have no place in public debate. They show profound disrespect and do a great injustice to the millions of Jews and other innocent victims killed by the Nazis.”

After the outpouring of criticism, Bailey told the Forward news source that he did not want to “minimize” the atrocities of the Holocaust.

“There is no human catastrophe comparable to the Holocaust.” In no way did I intend to diminish the crimes of the Holocaust or its stain on history. I intended to emphasize the sadness of the millions of newborns dying. I support and have spoken with many members of the Illinois Jewish community and look forward to working with them to make Illinois a safer and more accessible environment for all.”

For the upcoming November 2022 general election, Darren Bailey will face Pritzker, the state’s third Jewish governor.
