In a statement, the broadcaster said: “Everyone at BBC Radio Orkney mourns the sudden loss of our friend and colleague Dave Gray, who died on Wednesday after a short illness.
“For three decades Dave was the heart and soul of the BBC in Orkney and we will miss him terribly.
“Our thoughts are with his family and many friends at this most difficult time. We will share our tribute to Dave on Friday morning around Orkney at 7.30am.”
Gray presented a number of programs including Around Orkney.
He returned to the studio in January after retiring five years ago.
Listeners took to social media today to share their shock.
One wrote: “Very rare guy – you always left after doing better than before you ran into him – not many people around!
“I’m glad he finished his camper and started that trip around Ireland in it.”
Another said: “This is really sad, terrible news. He will be sorely missed by the wider community and my thoughts are with his family and colleagues. Rest well, Buddo.”
A third added: “I only spoke to him on Saturday. In shock. He often tells the ones you love that you love them. A better guy is hard to find.”
